“I see design as a big melting pot right now...” Jan Lim’s design career started in architecture school. As a transfer student his portfolio placed him in Woodbury University’s second year architecture program where he excelled in his class. During his years in architecture school Jan exhibited his work in galleries, won first place in the American Institute of Steel Construction competition with his colleague Jeffrey Dahl, and advanced a year of studio. In his 5th and final year Jan’s thesis project won the “Most Professionalism” award and was also nominated for “Best Design” and “Student Choice.” A designer “Is a problem solver with multiple answers expressed in any media.” While in architecture school, Jan was exposed to different cultures, issues, and mentalities which helped him develop his style as a designer. He believes that an idea is just an idea until it is put on paper. This is the translation that interests Jan the most as he approaches his projects with charettes and concepts. He uses these tools to help with ideas and the development of his work using photography as his media. “…It would be interesting to see where it goes from here.” |
